This event may be of interest to OASIS members and supporters, too. Western Museum of Flight Celebrity Lecture Series May 24 - 11 am Edmond PioneerEdmond Doak, VTOL Pioneer FeaturingFeaturing Ray Ulyate Although Vertical Takeoff and Landing (VTOL) technology is now a proven concept, embodied in the USMC V-22 Osprey, the early days of VTOL experimentation required bold and imaginative engineers and scientists. One of the boldest and most imaginative experimenters was EDMOND DOAK, founder of DOAK AIRCRAFT, whose work in aviation science for the US Army yielded many breakthroughs in this vital area of aviation technology. One of the young engineers who played a significant role in the achievements of Doak Aircraft is Ray Ulyate. After graduating from California Polytechnic University, with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering, Mr. Ulyate joined the Doak team, designing control system components. This was the summer of 1957. For the next several years, Ray played an increasingly significant role in VTOL development, including the job of supervising test activities at Edwards Air Force Base. Before leaving, to pursue other interests, Ray had participated in all phases of this pioneering technology. Please join us to hear Ray Ulyate share the history of early VTOL development as well as the story of Doak Aircraft. Western Museum of Flight 3315 Airport Dr. Torrance, CA 90505 (310) 326-9544 The lecture is free to Museum Members. Non-members: $5.
